Narnu Farm Camp 2006, Hindmarsh Island

Wednesday 6th September - Sunday 10th September 2006

Please email me (Beverley) contact@beverleypaine.com if you wish to reserve accomodation. There is a $15 booking fee, refundable until August 1st 2006.

We will be staying in the Bunkhouse, which sleeps 54 in eight rooms with showers and toilets near by. There are also several cottages that can be rented for the camp as well, if you prefer this option.

Sleeping in the Bunkhouse will cost:
$17 per person per night ($12 children under 6, children under 2 are free)
with a cleaning fee of $95

Free supervised animal feeding and cow milking.
BBQ facilities, 1/2 court tennis, and table tennis are free.
Blacksmithing, Hand Ploughing, Butter Making, and Vintage Truck Farm Tour $2 per person (minimum numbers apply)
Pony rides $10 per person minimum age 3 for 1/4 hour
Horse rides from $18 per person 1/2 hour trail ride minimum age 5
Riding lesson $30 per person (include trail ride) minimum age 5
Scenic Trail Ride $32 per person 1 hour minimum age 13
DVD Home Entertainment Theatre $20 per night

Situated on Hindmarsh Island overlooking the Murray River, five minutes from Goolwa. If we're interested in educational excursions we can visit the Signal Point Museum, Barrages plus Goolwa historic/heritage township and Museum. Water sports would be one possible activity. A car trip to see the mouth of the Murray is another. Or we can totally focus on the farm stay theme and develop educational activities around this.

For those that can't afford this camp we also have the much cheaper annual Point Sturt dormitory camp near Milang in May 2006. This camp focusses on relaxation, getting to know each other and activities that we bring along.

I am also happy to organise a Caravan Park camp sometime next year for those that like to camp in tents, or caravans or onsite cabins, but only if sufficient numbers are willing to book in advance (pay a booking fee). Suggestions: Second Valley, Aldinga, Kadina/Moonta area.

AUSLAN Group

Next month at the Auslan group we will be playing a game of "Go Fish"
during our meeting. We will be learning the signs for "(do) you have?"
and "Go fish" along with the number signs and the following animals.
I suggest that you practice at home before you come so that the game
flows smoothly. If there are too many words for your children to
remember just practice the animals and we play the animal version first.

As there seem to be several versions of some words we will be using the
ones from the sign bank http://www.auslan.org.au for this game.
The animals we will be using learning are:
Possum, cockatoo, emu, wombat, echidna, kangaroo.

Pt Dock National Railway Museum Excursion

A booking has been made for Friday 12th August at 12 noon.

The cost is $4 per child. Parents are free (They usually have a ratio of 1 adult to 4 children but I explained that we are all home educators and as such we take responsibility for our own children so naturally the ratio will be higher for us)

Bring the money on the day and give it to Vanessa as you arrive.

The Railway Museum is on Lipson Street at Port Adelaide.

I will need a confirmation of attendence by those who still want to go by Tuesday 9th August, so I can confirm numbers so that they can ensure they have enough guides.

I have some brochures that I will take to ice skating tomorrow if anyone would like one.

(The Military Museum is very close by if folk wanted to self organise to go there. It is possible to catch a train down to the Port or a bus. Also the Maritime Museum. )

Junior Field Naturalists

Junior Field Naturalists, which may be of interest to homeschooling families, meet once a month and usually have a guest speaker who addressed the group on their particular area of speciality. Meetings/speakers scheduled for the remainder of the year are as follows:

August 19th - speaker/subject TBA
September 16th - threatened species
October 21st - seals and sealions
November 18th - St Peters billabong (Wetlands) including end of year BBQ

Meetings start at 7:30pm till approximately 9:00pm at the latest and are usually held in the Nature Education Centre at Norwood Primary School, Osmond Terrace, Norwood (brightly painted building behind playground at southern end of yard).

Salt Water Meets Freshwater

FRIDAY 8th of JULY 1PM (Meeting at 12pm for lunch and a run around) - Session with Matt (from Waterwatch) runs for 1.5hrs
LOCATION: Weatherald Tce Footbridge, Port Noarlunga
TOPIC: Where Fresh Meets Salt: discuss tides, salinity fluctuations and water quality of the estuary; use ID charts to identify birds and plants; consider the importance of the estuary as a fish breeding area; discuss how the health of the estuary affects the marine environment.
BRING: drinking water and a clipboard and pencil if you want to do the associated worksheets.

Debbie has set up a database on the Yahoo site for people to register their attendance and as she needs to photocopy worksheets. Please indicate here how many worksheets you will need (ie one for each child you think will complete it). There is a charge to cover the copy costs $1 for info pack (10 pages) - about estuaries and answer key for field worksheet (1 per family) + 30c per worksheet per child.

Flinders Ranges Camp Update

Approximate cost:
$15 per person per night. Accommodation:
There are three buildings with dormitory style accomodation. The Bannon Wing has 4 rooms with bunk beds for 6 people in each room. The Jubilee Wing has 8 rooms with bunk beds for 6 people in each room. This wing also contains a kitchenette and a meeting room with easy chairs. Both of these wings are carpetted and have an en-suite.
The American Wing is an older style building with 6 rooms which each accommodate 4 people. Showers and toilets are situated at the end of this building under the same roof.

Other amenities:
The Chapel of Christ the King is available for worship and study. There is a dining room and modern kitchen with a cold room and industrial size gas stoves. The Centre also has a swimming pool, gas fired barbecue, and an Activity Hall for games and other activities. There is a large area for sport and outside activities.
There is gas heating in Hall and Chapel is available at hirer's expense. If we use this service we will ask all campers for a gold coin donation to cover the cost. All crockery, cutlery, and cooking utensils are on site. A phone is available for campers use. Reverse Charge Calls, Phone Away card or Telecard needed. The telephone number is (08) 8666 2177. There is a full-time Warden on site: (08) 8666 2096.

Camp rules:
No firearms, alcohol, dogs or gambling. No smoking inside buildings. No bleaches or disinfectants in toilets or handbasins - use products suitable only for septic tank systems. Swimming in the pool is only allowed if an adult is present to supervise.

Planned activities so far...
* Astronomy - Mr Jackson and the Paine's are both bringing telescopes, so we'll be doing some star gazing and astronomy.

* Shared meals...
Watch this space for information for a shared meal each day. Please bring ingredients to suit the meal which will communally cook! Lunch and Breakfast are self-catered by each family.

Every so often I'm part of a group talking about how to cater to the information needs of our growing homeschooling community, and it seems that a central web repository of information is the first essential step. Some Australian states have home education organisations that maintain excellent websites. Some individually owned sites maintain information and links. Keeping all this up-to-date and relevant is quite a task.

Ann's article talks about what homeschoolers want to see from a local information service. The question I'd like to ask is:

"Do homeschoolers prefer LOCAL information provided locally; or information relevant to their STATE only; or would they prefer to use a NATIONAL information service?"

I cannot hope to be an "expert" on such a wealth of materials that are already in your grasp. Please! Let us partner in what we each can do best. Beverley is holding an Open House and Information Afternoon on Sunday July 10th from noon at Yankalilla.
There will be unschooling & natural learning books for sale, magazines and homeschooling records, etc on display. Bring your questions for Beverley to try and answer!
For those wishing to stay later we will be cooking up a BBQ and bonfire about 5pm - bring your guitars, didgeridoos, tap sticks, drums, etc for some musical mayhem. If it's cold, and it should be, remember to bring jackets, boots, beanies and scarves!

$15 per person per night. Accommodation:
There are three buildings with dormitory style accomodation. The Bannon Wing has 4 rooms with bunk beds for 6 people in each room. The Jubilee Wing has 8 rooms with bunk beds for 6 people in each room. This wing also contains a kitchenette and a meeting room with easy chairs. Both of these wings are carpetted and have an en-suite.
The American Wing is an older style building with 6 rooms which each accommodate 4 people. Showers and toilets are situated at the end of this building under the same roof.

Other amenities:
The Chapel of Christ the King is available for worship and study. There is a dining room and modern kitchen with a cold room and industrial size gas stoves. The Centre also has a swimming pool, gas fired barbecue, and an Activity Hall for games and other activities. There is a large area for sport and outside activities.
There is gas heating in Hall and Chapel is available at hirer's expense. If we use this service we will ask all campers for a gold coin donation to cover the cost. All crockery, cutlery, and cooking utensils are on site. A phone is available for campers use. Reverse Charge Calls, Phone Away card or Telecard needed. The telephone number is (08) 8666 2177. There is a full-time Warden on site: (08) 8666 2096.

tea-towels
first aid equipment
detergent
toilet roll
sports equipment
inside games, art, craft and other activities

Camp rules:
No firearms, alcohol, dogs or gambling. No smoking inside buildings. No bleaches or disinfectants in toilets or handbasins - use products suitable only for septic tank systems. Swimming in the pool is only allowed if an adult is present to supervise.

Planned activities so far...
* Astronomy - Mr Jackson and the Paine's are both bringing telescopes, so we'll be doing some star gazing and astronomy.

* Shared meals...
Watch this space for information for a shared meal each day. Please bring ingredients to suit the meal which will communally cook! Lunch and Breakfast are self-catered by each family.

National Home Education Week - Looking Forward to 2005

National Home Education Week is over... and what a week of activities we had to celebrate learning at home and in the community!

Since it's inception a couple of years ago homeschoolers across Australia have taken to the idea of a national week of celebration with activities ranging from workshops to camps, art and craft activities, excursions, picnics, tree planting, educational activities, library sessions, bushwalks and more...

Some families celebrate privately while others get together with others to share the joy of learning without schools. The central idea is to recognise, honour and celebrate all approaches to home education, and if the idea is promoted more widely in the community - well, that's a bonus!
In South Australia 'Open House' Homeschooling Days have taken off and are a regular feature on the homeschooling community calendar. They offer families new to the idea of homeschooling the opportunity to talk to those with a year or two (or more) of experience. It's great 'peeking in' at how others homeschool - seeing how the home is set up as a learning environment, learning about other approaches to education, meeting the children and parents and generally becoming very reassured that homeschooling is a viable and successful alternative to sending your children to school.

If a number of people order together and the order is over $150 then we aren't charged any shipping otherwise there's a $11 shipping charge per order. This is for those who have recently joined and don't know much about Yahoo groups, and perhaps for those who have been here for a long time and don't know either ;o)

I thought I'd let people know how to use some of the features of our group website, e.g. how to find events on the calendar. Hopefully I haven't used too much jargon - if you don't understand, then ask and I or someone else can explain more.

If you go to the group website http://groups.yahoo.com/group/home-education-sa, you will see a number of options to choose from on the left hand side.

Calendar
Click on this, and you will then see a calendar from which you can choose any date to see if there are any events organised. Dates with an event are in bold type on the monthly calendar compared to dates with no events. Many of the events on the calendar have reminders sent to the list, say, a week beforehand. The calendar will help if you want to know what is on a particular date, but if you are looking for a particular event it could be hit and miss, and time consuming. A better option could be to bookmark the following page as a favourite website page. The second half of this page is a regularly updated listing of upcoming events http://sahome-ed.blogspot.com/

Messages
This is a way of looking at messages that have been posted, and you can also search for particular postings in the archives. Some people look at email postings at the website and don't receive the individual posts by email, others receive each email individually and others receive a digest, which is all the postings from the day in one long email. You can change the way you receive emails by clicking on 'edit my membership' near the top right hand corner and choosing a different option for 'message delivery'.

Photos
You can look at photos that members have put here to share with others.

Files
Contain information that members have thought to be useful to others. You can look at individual files, then download them to your own computer if you want. For example I have a file there for activity recording, you could look at it at the group website, then save it as a Word document on your computer, and make changes to your copy to tailor it to your own needs. LinksContains website links that members have thought to be of interest to others.DatabaseContains listings, borrowings etc for our home education library.Have fun exploring! And feel free to add anything you think may be of use to others.

Free Home Education Workshops

Beverley Paine is running a series of free monthly practical home education workshops in homeschooler family homes around the Adelaide metrolpolitan area in 2005. Some dates and venues are yet to be confirmed.

Beverley has nineteen years of homeschooling/unschooling experience and is the author of several titles on home education in Australia. She has spoken at South Australian and interstate home education conferences and run workshops for TAFE on Getting Started with Homeschooling.

Space is limited so bookings are essential. If you are bringing children, please bring toys or activities to occupy them.

If you wish to host one of the workshops below please contact Beverley as soon as possible so she can finalise and publicise the calendar. Hosts need to provide seating for about ten adults (inside or out, depending on the weather) and an activity space for supervised children to play. Beverley will bring afternoon tea - coffee, tea, etc, although the host is welcome to provide some as well.

To become a member of the library you need to become a member of the Yahoo group. You can elect to not receive emails posted to the list and simply use the library or other resources on the site if you wish. However, the daily emails, which can be received as a digest, are a great way of staying in contact with other homeschoolers in SA and notices about weekly and forthcoming events and activities are regularly posted.

Sports/Games Days
These days will be held at a selection of various parks around Adelaide and surrounds. Please bring hats, water bottles, suncreen and any sport equipment, frisbees, balls etc that your kids might like to use. There is a large area for team games for the bigger kids as well as a playground for the littler ones or the less sport inclined. Squad ia a grass roots, bring it home version of "scouts" where the children (and parents) designate what has to be done to earn a badge, design the badge and then go about earning it. The member share around the badges they have developed so their friends can earn the badges they have created.
